NORTHAMPTON - The Northampton Community Music
Center will extend its lease at the old South
Street School building until 2025, putting ideas of
buying the building on the back burner.
The City Council voted last week to extend the lease of the 139 South St. building. The move will allow the music center to make capital improvements to the building's interior and to the adjacent parking lot and retaining wall.
Ward 4 Councilor David J. Narkewicz said that conservative estimates to repair the retaining walls range between $150,000 and $200,000.
Under the terms of the lease, the building can only be used by a nonprofit organization for music education. The music center signed a 20-year lease of the former grammar school in 1998.
